Good Friday Service
Ravenswood Evangelical Covenant Church

Ravenswood Covenant Church will share our Good Friday Service with the Grace Spanish-speaking church this year. Each biblical text is short so we can read it in both English and Spanish. After each reading, a candle will be extinguished. We will sing just the first verse of each song in both English and Spanish.
We gather in stillness today to hear of Christ’s suffering on the cross. As we do, pray for the Church, the world, and for those of other faiths and no faith, remembering Jesus’ mercy and compassion for all the world. As you enter the sanctuary, please take a nail. Hold the nail in your hand throughout the service as a physical reminder of the suffering Christ endured on our behalf.
While we read scripture from the Gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John, we will extinguish candles as Christ’s closest followers and others along the way abandon Him. The large candle, the Christ candle, is extinguished last, representing the three days in the tomb. We ask the congregation to leave the sanctuary in silence at the end of the worship service.
La Iglesia del Pacto Evangélico de Ravenswood esta compartiendo el culto de Viernes Santo con La Iglesia del Pacto “Gracia” (Grace) este marzo 29 de 2024. Cada texto bíblico es corto y a causa leeremos tanto en Ingles y en el español. Después de que se lea cada texto, extinguiremos una vela. Cantaremos solamente el primer verso de cada alabanza escogida en español e inglés.
Nos reunimos hoy en solidaridad y calma para escuchar del sufrimiento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo en la cruz. Mientras lo hacemos, oramos por la Iglesia, el mundo, y por los de otras creencias, y hasta los que no tienen fe cualquiera, acordándonos de la misericordia y compasión de Cristo para con todo el mundo. (Por favor, al entrar al santuario, tengan la bondad de llevarse un clavo disponible a la entrada. Pedimos que sostengan el clavo en la palma durante el culto para que sirva de un recordatorio físico de cuanto sufrió Cristo por nosotros).
Mientras leemos la Sagrada Escritura en los evangelios de Mateo, Lucas, y Juan, seguidamente extinguiremos velas. Este acto demuestra como los seguidores y discípulos mas de cerca a Jesús, lo abandonaron en el camino. La vela grande, La vela de Cristo, se extingue a lo último, representando los tres días en el sepulcro. Pedimos que todos los participantes de las dos congregaciones salgan reflejando seriamente en silencio al finalizar el culto.

THE FIRST CANDLE: The Shadow of Betrayal
Reading: Luke 22:47-51
While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him; but Jesus said to him, ‘Judas, is it with a kiss that you are betraying the Son of Man?’ When those who were around him saw what was coming, they asked, ‘Lord, should we strike with the sword?’ Then one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, ‘No more of this!’ And he touched his ear and healed him.
Todavía estaba hablando Jesús cuando se apareció una turba, y al frente iba uno de los doce, el que se llamaba Judas. Este se acercó a Jesús para besarlo, pero Jesús le preguntó:
—Judas, ¿con un beso traicionas al Hijo del hombre?
Los discípulos que lo rodeaban, al darse cuenta de lo que pasaba, dijeron:
—Señor, ¿atacamos con la espada?
Y uno de ellos hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote, cortándole la oreja derecha.
—¡Déjenlos! —ordenó Jesús.
Entonces tocó la oreja al hombre y lo sanó.

THE SECOND CANDLE: The Shadow of Desertion
Reading: Psalm 22:1-5
Dios mío, Dios mío,

THE THIRD CANDLE: The Shadow of Unshared Grief
Reading: John 19:25-27
Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
Junto a la cruz de Jesús estaban su madre, la hermana de su madre, María, la esposa de Cleofas, y María Magdalena. Cuando Jesús vio a su madre y al discípulo a quien él amaba a su lado, dijo a su madre:
—Mujer, ahí tienes a tu hijo.
Luego dijo al discípulo:
—Ahí tienes a tu madre.
Y desde aquel momento ese discípulo la recibió en su casa.

THE FOURTH CANDLE: The Shadow of Accusation
Reading: Matthew 27:27-31
Los soldados del gobernador llevaron a Jesús al palacio y reunieron a toda la tropa alrededor de él. Le quitaron la ropa y le pusieron un manto color escarlata. Luego trenzaron una corona de espinas y se la colocaron en la cabeza; en la mano derecha le pusieron una vara. Arrodillándose delante de él, se burlaban diciendo:
—¡Viva el rey de los judíos!
También lo escupían y con la vara golpeaban su cabeza. Después de burlarse de él, le quitaron el manto, le pusieron su propia ropa y se lo llevaron para crucificarlo.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. After mocking him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

THE FIFTH CANDLE: The Shadow of Crucifixion
Reading: Matthew 27:33-37
And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots; then they sat down there and kept watch over him. Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, ‘This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.’
Llegaron a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que significa «Lugar de la Calavera». Allí dieron a Jesús vino mezclado con hiel; pero después de probarlo, se negó a beberlo. Lo crucificaron y repartieron su ropa, echando suertes. Y se sentaron a vigilarlo. Encima de su cabeza pusieron por escrito la causa de su condena: “Este es Jesús, el Rey de los judíos”.

THE SIXTH CANDLE: The Shadow of Disunity
Reading: Matthew 27:38-44
Con él crucificaron a dos bandidos, uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda. Los que pasaban meneaban la cabeza y blasfemaban contra él:
—Tú que destruyes el Templo y en tres días lo reconstruyes, ¡sálvate a ti mismo! Si eres el Hijo de Dios, ¡baja de la cruz!
De la misma manera, se burlaban de él los jefes de los sacerdotes, junto con los maestros de la Ley y los líderes religiosos.
—Salvó a otros —decían—, ¡pero no puede salvarse a sí mismo! ¡Y es el rey de Israel! Que baje ahora de la cruz y así creeremos en él. Él confía en Dios; pues que lo libre Dios ahora, si de veras lo quiere. ¿Acaso no dijo: “Yo soy el Hijo de Dios”?
Así también lo insultaban los bandidos que estaban crucificados con él.
Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, ‘You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.’ In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, ‘He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to; for he said, “I am God’s Son.” ’ The bandits who were crucified with him also taunted him in the same way.

THE SEVENTH CANDLE: The Shadow of Death
Reading: Luke 23:45-49
While the sun’s light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.’ Having said this, he breathed his last. When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, ‘Certainly this man was innocent.’ And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Pues el sol se ocultó. Y la cortina del santuario del Templo se rasgó por la mitad. Entonces Jesús exclamó con fuerza:
—¡Padre, en tus manos encomiendo mi espíritu!
Y al decir esto, expiró.
El centurión, al ver lo que había sucedido, alabó a Dios y dijo:
—¡Verdaderamente este hombre era justo!
Entonces los que se habían reunido para presenciar aquel espectáculo, al ver lo ocurrido, se fueron de allí golpeándose el pecho. Pero todos los conocidos de Jesús, incluso las mujeres que lo habían seguido desde Galilea, se quedaron mirando desde lejos.

Después de un período de silencio, se retira la vela de Cristo para una oscuridad total.
