WELCOME & GREETING, COMMUNITY LIFE

CALL TO WORSHIP
from Psalm 103 : 1-13
Leader: Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

People: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all His benefits—
who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the Pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good as long as you live
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

 Leader: The Lord works vindication
and justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known his ways to Moses,
His acts to the people of Israel.
People: The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
 He will not always accuse,
nor will He keep his anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins
nor repay us according to our iniquities.

ALL: For as the heavens are high above the earth,
    so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far He removes our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion for his children,
so the Lord has compassion for those who fear Him.

IT IS WELL (THROUGH IT ALL)
Grander earth has quaked before
Moved by the sound of His voice
Seas that are shaken and stirred
Can be calmed and broken for my regard

  chorus
Through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
Through it all, through it all
It is well
Through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
And it is well with me

Far be it from me to not believe
Even when my eyes can’t see
And this mountain that’s in front of me
Will be thrown into the midst of the sea

bridge
So let go my soul and trust in Him
The waves and wind still know His name

ending
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul

GOSPEL LESSON
(Stand as you are able for the reading of the Gospel.)
Matthew 2:13-15

Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and His mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy Him.” 14 Then Joseph got up, took the child and His mother by night, and went to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called My son.”

Leader: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON
Exodus 14:5-7, 10-14, 21-29

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the minds of Pharaoh and his officials were changed toward the people, and they said, “What have we done, letting Israel leave our service?” So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him; he took six hundred elite chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them.

As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked back, and there were the Egyptians advancing on them. In great fear the Israelites cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is this not the very thing we told you in Egypt, ‘Let us alone so that we can serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” 13 But Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today, for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still.”

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 The Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued and went into the sea after them, all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and chariot drivers. 24 At the morning watch the Lord, in the pillar of fire and cloud, looked down on the Egyptian army and threw the Egyptian army into a panic. 25 He clogged their chariot wheels so that they turned with difficulty. The Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the Israelites, for the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.”

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and chariot drivers.” 27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea returned to its normal depth. As the Egyptians fled before it, the Lord tossed the Egyptians into the sea. 28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the chariot drivers, the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea; not one of them remained. 29 But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left.

CHILDREN’S MOMENT

TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
Don’t lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him
And He will direct your paths.
Al-le-lu-ia, Al-le-lu-ia, and
He will direct your paths.

REFLECTING ON THE WORD
A Rescued People
Pastor Denise

ALONG THE BANKS OF THE DEEP RED SEA
Along the banks of the deep Red Sea,
Israel’s children had to stand.
Behind was Egypt’s tyranny,
Up ahead the promised land.
The cloud of God led forth by day,
The pillar of fire by night,
But the people grumbled on the way
As they took their flight.

The Pharaoh’s army, swift and strong,
Followed Israel to the shore.
Their orderrs were to return the throng
Back to slavery once more.
God placed the cloud to separate
Pursuers from the prey,
But the people feared a dreadful fate
For the coming day.

The people then to Moses cried,
“We were better off before.
Why did you bring us here to die
In this desert by the shore?”
But God told Moses what to say,
And take his staff in hand,
For it was the key to open a way
To the promised land.

Then Moses stretched o’er the deep Red Sea
And the waters parted wide.
God made a path to guarantee
Safety to the other side.
The people walked past water walls
On dry and solid ground,
But the army saw the walls come down,
And they all were drowned.

No circumstance, nor great expanse,
Is too big for God to span.
No enemy, nor dreadful sea,
Is beyond God’s pow’rful hand.
God’s sov’reign wisdom always shows
A lighted path as guide
To the land where milk and honey flows
On the other side.

OFFERTORY

DOXOLOGY & PRAYER
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN
L: As we move towards the table let us remember the proof of God’s amazing love is this:  while we were sinners Christ died for us.  Because we have faith in Him, we dare to approach God with confidence.  In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God:

L: The Lord be with you.
P: And also with you.

L: Let us confess our sins against God and neighbor.

All:  Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name.  Amen.

PASSING THE PEACE
L:  Since in Christ we are reconciled to God, so also we are reconciled to each other, the members of His body, the Church.  May God’s peace extend throughout this congregation.

L: The peace of Christ be with you
P: And also with you.
L:  Let us extend to each other signs of that peace.

(Extend greetings to those you’re with; comments online are welcome.)

INVITATION
It is now our sacred privilege to celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.  All who humbly put their trust in Christ and desire His help that they may lead a holy life; all who are truly sorry for their sins and would be delivered from them; all who would walk in love with their neighbors and intend to live a new life, following the commandments of God and walking from now on in His holy ways, are invited to draw near with faith and to receive this holy sacrament.

A PRAYER FOR COMMUNION
Holy God, we praise You.
Let the heavens be joyful and the earth be glad.

We bless You for creating the whole world,
for Your promises to your people Israel,
and for Jesus Christ in whom Your fullness dwells.

Born of Mary, He shares our life.
Eating with sinners, He welcomes us.
Guiding his children, He leads us.
Visiting the sick, He heals us.
Dying on the cross, He saves us.
Risen from the dead, He gives new life.
Living with You, He prays for us.

The Lord Jesus, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, “This is My body which is for you. Do this in remembering Me.”

In the same way He took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood.  Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembering Me.”

With thanksgiving we take this bread and this cup and proclaim the death and resurrection of our Lord.

Receive our sacrifice of praise.
Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us
that this meal may be a communion in the body and blood or our Lord.

Make us one with Christ
and with all who share this feast.

Unite us in faith,
encourage us with hope,
inspire us to love that we may serve

As Your faithful disciples
Until we feast at Your table in glory.

We praise you, eternal God,
through Christ Your Word made flesh,
in the holy and life-giving Spirit now and forever.  Amen.

SHARING IN COMMUNION

SPECIAL MUSIC

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Eternal God, heavenly father, You have graciously accepted us as living members of Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and You have fed us with spiritual food in the sacrament of His body and blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A SENDING FROM COMMUNION
What we have been about here is not separate from life. Rather these acts have been a reminder that we belong to Christ always and everywhere. We carry Christ’s Spirit into our homes, our daily activities, all our relationships. We are Christ’s people. By God’s grace let it be so. Amen.

GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH
Guide me, O thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty
Hold me with Thy pow’rful hand:
Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven
Feed me till I want no more (want no more),
Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong Deliv’rer, strong Deliv’rer,
Be Thou still my strength and shield (strength and shield),
Be Thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Bear me through the swelling current,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever give to Thee (give to thee),
I will ever give to Thee.

Worship update
The Leadership Team of Ravenswood Covenant Church recommends mask use during services, but this is not mandatory.

Ravenswood Covenant livestreams worship each week on YouTube and Facebook, so Sunday morning worship will remain accessible to anyone who has Internet access.

Farmers market
Our farmers market continues to be a success, as we’ve settled into a post-Covid average of about 400-500 adults per market, with a large and enthusiastic contingent of children for whom the market is a high point of every week.

The farmers market season will conclude with our annual Harvest Festival on Wednesday, October 12. We will have extra games for the kids, a firepit for making s’mores, pumpkin painting, and lots of other fun extras to celebrate the end of another great farmers market season.

We are looking for volunteers to help out with set-up, assisting with kids activities, and take-down at the Harvest Festival. If you can assist, please contact Bekah Carlson, Pastor Denise, or the church office.

Choir begins in October
Choir rehearsal for the Christmas season will start at the end of this month on Sunday, October 30. The choir will rehearse each Sunday at 8:30 am through Christmas. This is an opportunity for everyone, not just trained singers or choir veterans, to take part. For more information, please speak to Cynthia Arden or contact the church office.

Neighbor seeks aid
A woman in our community is seeking someone who can assist with the care of her son, who is 34 years old and has multiple sclerosis.  Her son is bedridden and needs a minimum of 40 hrs/week care.  The person assisting would need to feed her son breakfast each day (not weekends) and clean him as needed (bathroom cleaning) as well as sponge baths.  He is confined to bed, so there would not be the regular difficulties in moving him in and out of bed.

They live on N. Lincoln Avenue, close to Budlong Elementary School.  Light cleaning and vacuuming of his room would be expected, but no cleaning of the rest of the house.  Pay is $16 to $17/hour.

For more information, please contact Gregory in the church office.

Aid for Ukrainian refugees
Jeremy and Amanda Foster, who attend our church, have a direct connection to a mission that is serving refugees who have fled Ukraine following the Russian invasion. Jeremy’s parents Don and Beatrice Foster are in Hazebrouck, France as tentmaker missionaries and have prepared rooms in their home for refugees coming from Ukraine.

If you would like to donate to help the Fosters pay for extra food and supplies, please give a donation to Ravenswood Covenant that is specially designated for Ukrainian refugees. If you would like to give directly online, the website for the Fosters is https://ukraine.la-ferme-de-la-papote.com/ .

The Covenant denomination is also raising funds for Ukraine through Covenant World Relief. Here is the link if you would like to donate through the Covenant’s program. https://giving.covchurch.org/priorities-detail/ukraine-response

Our church exists to love and worship God, and love and care for others. By God’s grace, we commit to help people find and follow Jesus Christ through the guidance of His Spirit and His word.

"With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade." (Mark 4:30-32 NRS)
